Staff Software Engineer - Backend (Persistence)

ServiceNow is a global market leader in AI-enhanced technology, bringing innovative cloud-based platforms to customers. The company is looking for a Staff Software Engineer - Backend (Persistence) to build the backbone of the ServiceNow AI Platform. The successful candidate will work on top of core data architecture, ensuring quality, reliability, security, and performance.

Requirements

• Experience in leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving.
• Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience; or equivalent experience
• 6+ years of hands-on backend development with experience in Java.
• Experience with modern front-end frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue.
• Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, design patterns, and performance optimization
• Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (e.g., JUnit, Selenium, TestNG) and integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines
• Understanding software quality principles including reliability, observability, and production readiness.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and optimize performance across the stack.
• Experience with AI-powered tools or workflows, including validation of datasets, model predictions, and inference consistency.
• Comfort with development tools such as IDEs, debuggers, profilers, source control, and Unix-based systems
• Relational Database Experience: Developing on, troubleshooting, and optimizing performance.
• Good understanding of cloud-based and distributed systems. Knowledge and/or experience with relational databases: Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, MS SQL Server
• Deep knowledge of databases, data modelling, and data storage technologies.
• Experience with troubleshooting difficult production issues e.g., memory leaks, concurrency issues, locking issues, network problems, intermittent failures etc. across the stack.
• Nice to have: Familiarity with ServiceNow platform, Familiarity with RDBMS internals, Passionate about database technologies, Experience with Unix shell, Experience working in a DevOps environment, Experience working in a customer focused environment, Experience with Knowledge Graph technologies like Cypher and Neo4J
